There’s something about May in Door County that feels like a quiet secret. If you’ve even been here, during this time of year, you know what we’re talking about. The peninsula wakes up, as do the cherry blossoms.
The Story That Built the Inn
Built in 1905 by Freeman Thorp–nephew of Fish Creek founder Asa Thorp–and his wife Jessie, the home became something more after tragedy struck. When Freeman died in a shipwreck, his widow opened the home to guests, thus creating one of the earliest hospitality experiences in Door County.
From those beginnings, the property evolved into a cornerstone of Fish Creek lodging, with cottages added in the 1930s and a full restoration in 1986 that preserved its historic charm while elevating comfort for modern travelers.
Today, the Thorp House remains listed on the National Register of Historic Places, continuing a legacy of welcoming guests for over 100 years.
What Guests Are Really Looking For
Travel has changed, but what people truly want hasn’t.
Guests today are searching for:
-
Connection over transaction
-
Authenticity over standardization
-
Calm, curated experiences over crowded itineraries
-
Spaces that feel intentional, personal, and memorable
Our team strives everyday to deliver on these pieces, and much more. Hospitality isn’t manufactured. It’s inherited.
Why Fish Creek Still Matters
Originally settled in the mid-1800s as a fishing and logging village, it grew into one of Door County’s most beloved destinations, while still maintaining its small-town identity.
Located along Green Bay and adjacent to Peninsula State Park, it offers that rare combination of:
-
Walkable charm
-
Natural beauty
-
Deep-rooted history
And in May, before peak summer arrives, it feels like you have it almost to yourself.

A Note from Matt (Owner of the Thorp House Inn)
“Hello from the Inn! It looks like we are finally turning the corner from winter into spring. It was a long, cold, and snowy winter, and this patch of snow, on April 23, was the last to melt on the property.
We're putting the final touches on cleaning up the Inn, and preparing the property for the season. We take the utmost care of all pieces of the property, so that we can maintain its historic charm as long as possible.
Lastly, we wrapped up our spring cleaning, and every room has been specially touched and cleaned to make your arrival comfortable and memorable.
We can’t wait to see you all this season, and look forward to what 2026 has to offer.”
